Traffic Control Signage

Keep drivers moving with traffic control signage that meets state and federal guidelines.

Traffic control signs, also known as regulatory signs, direct motorists navigating your parking lots, driveways, loading docks, and entryways. As opposed to warning and guide signage, traffic control signage informs drivers of penalties, laws, and rules that must be followed to secure safe passage for all vehicles.

Traffic control signs must meet regulatory standards set forth by your state’s Department of Transportation (DOT) and the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Despite the granularity of both agencies’ requirements, a degree of customizability is available from the pros at Image360 Newington.

We understand the number of traffic safety signs can vary based on the needs of your business. A working knowledge of the assorted types available can help inform your eventual decision and speed up the consultation process.

What are the most common types of traffic control signs?

  • Stop signs force drivers to come to a complete stop at the edge of a painted line or intersection. Octagonal and large, these signs feature a red background with white letters.
  • Yield signs resemble an upside-down triangle, displaying a white background with a red or orange border. Yield signs are best thought of as “stop if necessary” indicators.
  • Speed limit signs communicate the maximum speed a driver may travel in miles per hour. They usually consist of black letters on a white background, though they may be yellow when coupled with a warning sign.
  • Private road signs restrict the public from driving on streets that your company or commercial venture may own. There aren’t any guidelines that must be adhered to when designing a private road sign, so choose a sign that aligns with the impression you’re trying to make.
  • Do Not Enter signs restrict drivers from entering a road from the wrong direction. The MUTCD requires this sign to be red and white.
  • No parking signs prohibit patrons from leaving their vehicles in front of storefronts and shipping areas. Don’t be afraid to display these wherever employees exit and enter frequently, so that obstructions don’t inhibit day-to-day operations.
  • Pedestrian crosswalk signs protect consumers from potentially fast and reckless drivers. Some depict a pictograph of a person crossing, while others simply contain text.

Requirements for Regulatory Signs

Always check with your state government before deciding on the attributes of the traffic control signage for your lot or loading dock. Chapter 2B of the Manual of Traffic Signs contains charted information on the exact dimensions you’ll need to adhere to for each variation of sign.

Stop signs should only be employed when a less frequented road intersects with a high-traffic roadway. At a bare minimum, one should be placed for drivers exiting your parking lot and merging onto the street.

Miscellaneous signage informing visitors of penalties, such as fines and towing, have more leeway as far as text, colors, and typography is concerned. Image360 Newington can collaborate with you to find the ideal design for signage addressing parking, loitering, smoking, and other concerns.

Now that you have an excellent understanding of the many ways traffic control signs can address your business’s unique challenges, let’s move forward.

Randy came through big time for us at Express Kitchens. I called Randy at 4:40 pm on Thursday afternoon for an emergency sign job. At 6:00 pm Friday(the next day) we were installing the signage. This was a 8’x8’ vinyl sign two pieces. The vinyl we needed was not even a stock item for Image360newington. Randy and his crew saved the day for us and this was the first time ever dealing with Image360newington
